Parkhurst was a soldier, correspondent and writer from LeClaire, Iowa. At the age of 15 he enlisted with the 16th Iowa Infantry, Company C. During his service he spent 7 months in the Confederate prison at Andersonville. After his discharge he returned to LeClaire and worked as a correspondent for the Davenport Democrat.
